What Field Mowing Costs
For most smaller fields, mowing runs about $50 to $150 an acre. Larger fields bring the per-acre price down — 15 acres and up is often $35 to $60 an acre, because the machine spends its time mowing instead of turning around.
What moves the number is how tall and heavy the growth is, how many obstacles we have to work around, and how rough the ground is underneath. A field that gets mowed every year is quick work. One that has not been touched in three seasons, with saplings coming through the grass, takes a brush hog and more time. Customers on a recurring schedule get a better rate than one-off calls. If the growth has gone past grass and weeds into woody brush, brush clearing is the right tool for the first pass; mowing keeps it open after that.
When to Mow, and How Often
For appearance and weed control, the useful rule is to mow before the weeds set seed. Thistle, burdock and ragweed all spread from a single missed season, and catching them early means fewer passes later. Most owners who want a field to simply look maintained land on two or three cuts a season.
Vacant lots in town are a different question — there the schedule is usually set by the local weed ordinance, and a standing arrangement is the easiest way to stay out of trouble.
