Laying Out a Trail That Lasts

The difference between a trail that holds up and one that becomes a ditch is almost always water. A line straight down a slope collects runoff and washes out by the second spring. A trail that sits across the contour, with grade breaks that shed water off the side, stays put for years with nothing but mowing.

So we walk the property first and lay the route to the ground you have: around the wet spots, across the slope rather than down it, and past the parts of your land worth seeing. Width and clearance depend on what will use it — a side-by-side needs more room than a walking path, and horses need more headroom than either.

Where a trail has to cross a creek or a drainage, we keep it simple and solid: a small culvert or a hardened crossing sized for what actually comes down it in a hard rain. We don't build bridges — if a span is what your property needs, we'll tell you early rather than halfway through. Turnarounds and a place to park go in at the same time.

From Walkthrough to Finished Trail

It starts with a walkthrough. We look at what you have, talk about where you want to end up, and flag a route. You see the line before anything is cut, and changing it at that stage costs nothing.

Then we clear the corridor, shape the tread, handle the light drainage work and crossings, and finish the surface. When we leave, the trail is usable — not a rough cut you have to work on yourself. After that it needs mowing a couple of times a season to stay open.
