What Trail Upkeep Involves

A trail closes in from three directions at once: grass and weeds from below, brush from the sides, and branches from above. Mowing the floor is the easy part. Keeping the corridor open — cutting the side growth back to a consistent width and clearing the overhead so a machine or a rider passes without ducking — is what keeps a trail genuinely usable.

Most trail systems need two to four passes in a growing season. Early summer is when everything grows at once; a cut in late summer keeps the trail open through hunting season. Between visits, what usually needs attention is storm damage: limbs down across the trail and washed-out spots where water found a new path.

We can also GPS map your system and give you a map you can actually share with family or guests — useful on larger properties where the trails have never been written down anywhere.

What It Costs and How to Get Started

Trail work is priced by the mile and by condition, so the fastest way to a number is the calculator below — answer a few questions about length, width and how long it has been since the last cut, and you will get a ballpark range right away. A firm quote comes after we walk it with you, which is free.

Owners who would rather not think about it put their trails on a recurring plan: we come on a schedule through the season, handle the storm cleanup as it happens, and bill monthly. You stop noticing the trails, which is the point.

If the trail you want does not exist yet, that is trail planning and creation. If brush has closed a trail completely, brush clearing reopens it first. We maintain trails around Maquoketa, Galena and throughout the area.
